How do ebook reservations work?

Answer

When the ebook user limit has been reached, you will be offered the ability to place a hold or reservation for the title. You will then be notified when the ebook has become available.

The GSA Library receives 'turnaway' alerts, which means we keep track of which titles our users are being denied access to due to the user limit being reached. We evaluate these on a weekly basis to decide whether to increase our user limit.

Please see further details below for each of our ebook providers: Browns and EBSCO.

Browns:

  • If you have reserved the title, you have 12 hours to collect the title before it is released to allow other students to access the ebook
  • The online reader will time out after 2 hours of inactive use, which will allow the title to be read by other students
  • Maximum download duration before expiry: 1 day
  • Maximum number of ebook loans at one time from Browns eBooks: 3 loans

EBSCO:

  • If you have reserved the title, you have 3 days to collect the title before it is released to allow other students to access the ebook
  • The online reader will time out after 30 minutes of inactive use, which will allow the title to be read by other students.
  • Maximum download duration before expiry: 1 day
  • Maximum number of ebook loans at one time from EBSCO eBooks: 50 loans
