I want to discuss a text with my students in an online seminar, reading group or crit. Can I use the camera on my smart device to live-stream the text from a copy in my home library?

Answer

Practicably, a risk-managed approach should be employed in this scenario. Live-streaming text to a matriculated cohort of students will likely be permissible under the ‘quotation’ copyright exemption, especially where usual access to the resource is impractical. This is useful if you wish to share a section of text for group discussion. However, these sessions should be delivered through a closed network, and should not be recorded or subsequently shared. Similarly, you should try to restrict your use of these texts to a ‘fair’ amount (in normal circumstances this equates to 10% of the volume, or 1 chapter, whichever is the greater).
