Can I scan my own books to share with students and upload the scans to Canvas?
I have found something in a book that I own but the library doesn't hold that I would like to share with my students, is it OK to scan this myself and upload it to Canvas?
Answer
No, you should not undertake any scanning yourself. Library Services will scan the material on your behalf, as the unauthorised scanning and disseminating of in-copyright texts can incur a large fine for Glasgow School of Art.
All scans that are intended to be accessed by students must be recorded with the Copyright Licensing Agency. Library Services has well-established workflows for the scanning of texts, and these ensure that our scanning remains legal and is recorded for annual audit by the CLA.
Any unauthorised scans that are discovered during periodic audits of Canvas will be removed.
If you have sections of a text that you would like to make available to your students, just get in touch at resourcelist@gsa.ac.uk. Library staff will search a number of sources to see if the resource is available for electronic purchase, or will scan from physical stock, and will embed this in Canvas for your students to access securely. We will keep you up-to-date throughout.
